In 2024, 406 BBQ became the only Montana-based company ever invited to cater at the Kentucky Derby, serving Asian and Hawaiian fusion barbecue at the historic Churchill Downs.

Stephen Kina described the invitation as one that initially “seemed like a scam” before it turned into what he’s called the opportunity of a lifetime. From a food truck parked in the Flathead Valley to cooking at the 150th running of the Kentucky Derby, the invitation marked a turning point for 406 BBQ, proof that the fusion of Southern barbecue and Hawaiian flavor Stephen had been building a name on in Montana could hold its own on one of the biggest stages in the country.

The story didn’t stay local for long. It was picked up nationally, putting 406 BBQ in front of an entirely new audience and cementing the idea that this small Montana catering company could go anywhere.
