Grandma’s Mac Salad

Every family in Hawaiʻi has their own version of mac salad, and this one is special to me because it’s my grandma’s recipe that was passed down to my dad, and now to me. Mac salad recipes can vary from family to family — some add carrots, some add potatoes, some keep it simple — but no matter how you make it, mac salad is one of the ultimate side dishes in Hawaiʻi. It belongs next to BBQ, kalbi, laulau, chicken katsu, teriyaki chicken, and every good plate lunch. 🤙🏽 For me, recipes like this are more than just food. They’re family history. They’re the small details that keep our people connected — the way your grandma made it, the way your dad remembers it, and the way you carry it forward for the next generation. Simple, creamy, nostalgic, and made with love.
